Title: student-teacher
Age: 25
Sun Sign: Leo
Chinese Sign: Wood Rat
Location: Grants Pass, OR
About Me:
Just to get it out of the way, since so many people like to ask: I'm not a male or a female, with regards to my sex. I am not a man or a woman, with regards to gender. Im not having an identity crisis, and I'm not going through gender confusion. ^_^
I consider myself to be a student-teacher. I want to teach and learn from people.
My hobbies are writing: journal, poetry, newspaper or internet articles, I'm woking on writing a book; I enjoy figure drawing (nudes); I read a LOT (I am reading about 8 books concurrently this summer).
I have a loving partner who, at this time lives on the other side of the world from me. I am studying Gender and Sociology here in the US; my partner is working on zir master's degree in Alternative Education in AU so ze can work with people who learn in different ways, or who deal with language barriers while they are learning.
When describing myself, I like to discribe my interests because these are things that are influencing who I am at this time in my life's process.
My main areas of interest are sex (Anatomy), and Gender (Socially gendered patterns based on concepts of masculinity and femininity). I am also interested in how gender intersects with class, age, ability, national origin, and race, in ways that advantage some people, and disadvantage others.
I am very concerned with poverty and wealth. I have spent much of my life either living on the streets (as a child) and living by the good graces of others (currently).
I'm also deeply troubled by the amount of debt people are encouraged to take on. One example (out of many that exist) is the cost of education in the US. In order to attend the University I would like to attend, I would have to go 40,000 + into debt not counting interest for the first year, and about 20,000 a year after I establish residency.
I believe that the moment education became a business, it became an institution of class, a ready participant in classism (The systematic advantage of those with wealth, and disadvantage of those without wealth.)
